What is Abrasive Blasting?
Abrasive blasting is a process that uses pressurised air or water to propel abrasive media against a surface to remove coating, corrosion, or contamination. Also known as sand blasting, grit blasting, or media blasting, abrasive blasting is used to: take a rough surface smooth, make a smooth surface rough, shape a surface, remove surface contaminants or material, like paint, rust, or residue, clean or prepare a surface, finish a surface. Depending on the type of abrasive media used, the blasted surface with have a smooth, angled, or dimpled profile.
How abrasive is garnet blasting media?
Garnet blasting media (also referred to as sand blasting media) is harder, heavier and more durable than other abrasive blasting abrasive. It cuts faster and significantly increases productivity while reducing abrasive consumption. Reduced abrasive consumption leads to significant savings in shipping, handling and disposal. Garnet is ideally suited to recycling when used in blast-room settings, typically providing three to five turns, making it one of the most economical mineral abrasives on the market.
How should you cover edge on abrasive blasting?
Cover the area you would like to protect from sandblasting with vinyl (with adhesive on one side). Use enough vinyl that it covers more than the area you wish to mask. Using a sharp blade, cut away the excess vinyl around the shape you are masking off. Mask the area again over the vinyl with electrical tape. Electrical tape will absorb a lot of energy which will prevent the tape itself from being sandblasted away. Without the vinyl underlayer, the adhesive on the electrical tape will embed itself into your metal which can be removed by hand sanding. I use the vinyl underneath because the adhesive on the vinyl does not get embedded as easily. Cut away the excess electrical tape like you did with the vinyl previously. With these two layers of masking material, your project is ready to be sandblasted. Remove both layers after you are finished completely with your sandblasting.
How to do wet abrasive blasting?
Wet abrasive blasting (also known as vapour abrasive blasting) removes coatings, contaminants, corrosion and residues from hard surfaces. It’s similar to dry blasting, except that the blast media is moistened prior to impacting the surface.
The main advantage of vapour abrasive blasting over dry blasting is that it reduces dust, allowing for operators to work in a wide range of environments with minimal setup and clean-up costs. It results in a cleaner, more consistent finished, ready to coat, with no embedded particles or clinging dust.
Is crystalline silica still banned for abrasive blasting in the UK?
Sandblasting in its true term is the use of silica sand as the abrasive material, silica sand is classified by having >1% free silica and is prohibited for use by the HSE in the UK as the dust generated may contain respirable crystalline silica (RCS).
